How to plan a romantic escape

A romantic escape needs no excuse, and that freedom is its biggest advantage. With no wedding date or anniversary to work around, you can pick the island in its best month, travel when prices soften and size the trip to the time you actually have. The question to answer first is how far you are willing to go for the nights available.

Distance against nights

NightsWhere it worksWhy
3 to 5Santorini, MallorcaShort flights from Europe and transfers under an hour
7 to 10Maldives, Mauritius, SeychellesLong-haul, but a week repays the journey
10 or moreBora Bora, Moorea, FijiThe flight is long enough to need recovery days

What to check before booking

  • The mood you want: a sunset among village crowds in Oia and a silent atoll are both romantic, but rarely for the same couple.
  • Whether you will leave the hotel: if you like walking to dinner, choose a village or a big island over a single-resort atoll.
  • Shoulder-season value: flexible dates let you pick months like May, June or September in the Mediterranean, or the Maldives' quieter months, when rates fall noticeably.
  • Privacy on your terrace: on cliffside Santorini especially, ask whether neighbouring suites or a public path overlook yours.

Budget signals

Short-haul escapes cost far less in total even when nightly rates are high: a Santorini caldera suite starts from around US$400 to US$600 a night in season, and four nights there costs a fraction of a Maldives week, which the site's guides put from around US$10,000 for two at the smart-luxury level. Mauritius, from around US$5,000 a week, is the gentlest long-haul price. For a spontaneous trip we'd favour somewhere you can reach the same day.
