Grace Bay on Providenciales is one of the Caribbean's best-known beaches, lined with resorts, restaurants and calm turquoise water. Beyond it, private-island resorts such as Parrot Cay offer more seclusion at a higher price.

Planning a Turks & Caicos trip

Turks & Caicos is the Caribbean island group that asks the least of you. Nearly every visitor lands at Providenciales, the drive to a Grace Bay hotel is typically 15 to 20 minutes, and an offshore barrier reef keeps the water calm enough for paddleboarders and young children most days. It suits first-time Caribbean travellers, families and anyone with only a long weekend to spare. Those who want lots of variety in landscape or a lively village scene may find Provo a little uniform.

When to go

January to April gives the most reliable weather and, from roughly January to March, humpback whales passing through the channels to the south-east. December is also popular, especially over the holidays. From June to November rates fall but hurricane risk rises, peaking from about mid-August to mid-October.

Getting there

Nonstop flights reach Providenciales (PLS) from several US hubs, with Miami under two hours away and New York closer to four. From the UK there is no longer a direct service, and the British Airways route stops in Nassau, so expect a long travel day. A US dollar economy keeps costs simple, though resort taxes and service charges add noticeably to quoted room rates.

Where to base yourself

Grace Bay is the default: one long public beach with hotels, villas and restaurants along the road behind it. Pick a central spot if you want to walk to dinner, or the quieter ends towards The Bight or Leeward. The alternative is a private cay. Parrot Cay and Pine Cay are reached by road and boat from Leeward Marina, while Ambergris Cay needs a short flight, and each trades restaurant choice for a beach with almost nobody on it.

How long to stay

Five nights is the comfortable minimum for a first trip, leaving room for a Caicos Cays boat day with a spare day if the wind is up. Four works on an early nonstop from the eastern US. From Europe, or for a private island, a week makes more sense.

Where to start

Comparing it with a neighbour? The Caribbean overview sets Turks & Caicos against Anguilla, Antigua and the Bahamas.
