Choosing between Bali and Koh Samui

The two Asian islands on Lagoon Edit answer different briefs. Bali is a destination with real cultural depth, where temples, rice terraces and a jungle base around Ubud sit alongside cliff-top villas and calm resort beaches. Koh Samui, in the Gulf of Thailand, is a simpler beach island: smaller, quicker to get around, and built around pool villas, sunrise or sunset bays and a gentle pace. Both are good value for private-pool accommodation compared with the Indian Ocean, which is why they appear often in the site's villa and honeymoon guides.

Opposite weather calendars

The detail that most often decides between them is the monsoon. Bali's dry season runs from roughly April to October, and it is wettest from December to February. Samui follows the Gulf pattern, with its heaviest rain from about October to December and its most dependable sea from January to April. In practice, a European summer trip points to Bali, and a February or March escape points to Samui.

Getting there and getting around

Bali's Ngurah Rai airport has direct long-haul links from the Gulf, Asia and Australia, and international visitors pay a one-off provincial tourist levy of IDR 150,000. Roads are slow, so the time from the terminal to Ubud can run past two hours at peak times. Samui's small airport is served mainly by Bangkok Airways, with flights of a little over an hour from Bangkok, and most resorts are within an hour's drive. Samui works neatly as the beach end of a Thailand trip; Bali usually deserves a trip of its own.
