The best islands for an anniversary trip are the ones that give the occasion a clear shape: a private-island Maldives week for total quiet, a remote Seychelles estate for a big milestone, a Mauritius suite for gentle variety, a Santorini caldera terrace for a short celebration, or a Mallorca mountain village for a slower, more cultural one. This guide is organised around the occasion instead of the beach: what each resort can set up for dinner, how much privacy you get, whether you want a hushed or a lively evening, and when to travel.

Candlelit beach dinner for two in the Maldives
A table set on the sand is the classic Maldives anniversary move, and it works best when you choose the evening and menu a few days ahead.

How to choose by milestone

The number on the anniversary changes the brief more than the destination does. A first or second anniversary usually wants a reset, so a beach island with a private pool and one very good dinner is plenty. Ten or fifteen years in, many couples want the opposite of routine: a journey, a restaurant worth planning around, or a place neither of you has been. For a twenty-fifth or thirtieth, a rare setting with a handful of villas tends to justify the cost, because the privacy is part of the gift.

If this is your first year as a married couple, our guide to first-time honeymoon islands covers the gentler, easier-logistics end of the same idea. This page leans toward couples who have travelled together before and want the trip to feel specific to them.

Quiet romance or lively romance

Decide this before you pick an island, because it removes half the options. Quiet romance means no schedule, few other guests in sight and dinner at your own villa or on a beach with only staff nearby. Lively romance means a bar you can walk to after dinner, a town with restaurants and the sense that the evening is happening somewhere.

  • Quiet: North Island and One&Only Reethi Rah, where the resort is the whole destination and each villa is set apart from the next.
  • In between: Grace Hotel and La Residencia, calm properties inside villages, so you can have either kind of evening.
  • Livelier: Royal Palm, with Grand Baie close enough for a night out.

If the two of you disagree, a split stay works. Three nights somewhere secluded followed by three somewhere with streets to wander settles it better than a compromise resort. Couples weighing a remote island against a conventional resort can read private island versus luxury beach resort first.

Maldives: private dining and space for two

One&Only Reethi Rah: best for choosing your own celebration setting

Reethi Rah is large enough that an anniversary dinner can be one of several quite different evenings. The resort publishes a 2026 private dining brochure with settings that include an overwater table at the Chi Pavilion, a draped tent at the water edge, and themed beach dinners with Maldivian, Japanese or Middle Eastern menus. That range helps if you want the occasion to feel designed instead of generic. The island also has around six restaurants, including the overwater Tapasake, so the nights between the big dinner do not repeat themselves.

Privacy for two comes from the spread of beach and water villas around the island, not from a tiny footprint. Villa counts vary by source, from roughly 118 to 130 depending on how residences are counted, so confirm the category you are being quoted. I did not find a published anniversary package for 2026, so ask what the resort will arrange and what it charges.

  • Best for: couples who want a quiet week with several dinner styles to choose from.
  • Transfer: shared yacht or speedboat from Malé airport, around 45 to 50 minutes, charged separately at about US$890 per person return; private boats cost more.
  • Rates: a Beach Villa with breakfast costs from around US$1,950 a night between mid-July and mid-December and about US$2,700 from mid-January to mid-April, before service, GST and Green Tax; Water Villas with pool start near US$3,000.
  • Don’t miss: the private dining options, which need booking ahead and depend on weather.

Good to know: Maldives tourism GST is 17% and a 10% service charge applies, plus the Green Tax at US$12 per person per night, so a quote without these is not the final figure. Our Maldives resorts for couples page compares other options, and the Maldives cost guide covers the full budget.

Seychelles: a milestone worth the logistics

North Island: best for a once-in-a-decade anniversary

North Island is the answer when the occasion deserves a place almost nobody else is at. It has only 11 villas, and the couples-oriented one, Villa North Island, sits on a granite headland above East Beach and is described as the most private on the island. Rates are all-inclusive and cover meals, most drinks and activities such as diving, kayaking and sunset cruises, so dinner setups, picnics and boat outings are part of the stay instead of separate add-ons. The island also runs a conservation programme, which gives you a shared activity that is not another spa slot.

Because the price is so high, treat the celebration as the main trip. Agent listings put a Beachfront Villa at around US$10,550 a night and Villa North Island at around US$13,050, full board and before 15% VAT, so ask for a written quote that states what is included and what the helicopter transfer costs, since some sellers charge it separately.

  • Best for: major milestones where privacy and rarity are the gift.
  • Transfer: helicopter from Mahé, roughly 15 to 20 minutes, often priced on request on top of the villa rate, plus a mandatory meet-and-assist fee of about €150 per adult.
  • Rates: from around US$10,550 a night for two in a Beachfront Villa, full board with house drinks and a daily massage; seasonal rates vary, so check live prices.
  • Don’t miss: a beach or headland dinner arranged for your anniversary evening.

Good to know: helicopters fly in daylight and suitable weather, so avoid a tight same-day onward flight. Our best private island resorts in the world list sets North Island alongside similar places.

North Island, Seychelles
Few places have so few guests per beach, which is the real luxury on North Island and the reason a short stay still feels complete.

Mauritius: elegant evenings with somewhere to go

Royal Palm Beachcomber Luxury: best for a livelier, well-dressed anniversary

Royal Palm suits the couple who likes to dress for dinner. Its roughly 69 suites face the sea, and the Romance Palm and higher categories give you extra space for an evening on the terrace. La Goélette is the signature restaurant over the bay, while the Italian trattoria La Brezza offers a more casual night, so you can change the mood without leaving the property. Grand Baie is close, so a dinner out, a stroll or a sunset drive needs no planning.

That access is the difference from the island resorts above. Privacy is good but not absolute, so this is the pick for a warm, social celebration, not silence. I could not find current nightly rates, so compare dates directly and ask whether any anniversary or honeymoon arrangement applies.

  • Best for: couples who want polish, a choice of restaurants and a town nearby.
  • Location: northwest coast, close to Grand Baie, with a calm beach.
  • Rates: beachfront Junior Suites on bed and breakfast run from around US$750 a night in the mid-May to September green season and about US$1,350 in the October to December and April to May high seasons, rising to around US$1,450 over the festive weeks; VAT is included, and the €3 per person tourist fee is added.
  • Don’t miss: a table at La Goélette booked for the anniversary night.

Good to know: cyclone season runs roughly November to April, peaking January to March, and December and January are the most expensive weeks. October to early December or May to June are calmer choices. Our seven-day Mauritius itinerary helps fill the days.

Santorini: a short celebration on a terrace

Grace Hotel, Auberge Resorts Collection: best for quiet romance with a view

Grace works for anniversaries because the hotel is small and adult-oriented, with guests under 14 limited to the villa. Its 22-metre heated infinity pool and caldera terraces make the property itself the occasion, and newer Infinity Suites have private heated pools. Varoulko Santorini, led by chef Lefteris Lazarou, serves dinner by the pool, and suite guests can reportedly arrange private dining. Imerovigli is calmer than Oia, so you can watch the sunset without the crowd.

Room choice matters more here than the hotel name. Sizes run from around 50 to 400 square metres, and plunge pools, heated pools and terraces differ, so tell the hotel it is an anniversary and ask which suite has the best privacy and sunset angle. See Oia versus Imerovigli if you are still deciding on the village.

  • Best for: a three to five night anniversary built around a terrace, a pool and a long dinner.
  • Location: Imerovigli, on the caldera edge between Fira and Oia.
  • Rates: Deluxe Rooms with breakfast are from around US$900 a night in spring and October and around US$1,800 in August and September, VAT included, plus a climate resilience fee of €15 per room per night; Grace Suites start near US$1,900.
  • Don’t miss: dinner at Varoulko, booked in advance.

Good to know: September and October bring thinner crowds and warm seas, and October rates are noticeably lower than August and September, but Grace Hotel closes for winter in late October, so confirm opening dates. For other short trips, see the five-night island list.

Mallorca: a slower, more cultural anniversary

La Residencia, A Belmond Hotel, Mallorca: best for village evenings and mountain days

La Residencia is the choice when you would prefer to mark the anniversary with a long dinner and a walk than a beach day. The hotel sits on the edge of Deià in the Tramuntana and mixes a manor house with art and gardens. El Olivo occupies a former olive mill and holds a 2025 Michelin Plate, so it suits the big night, while the village has smaller restaurants for the others. Rooms vary, with some larger terraces and private pools, so ask for the one that suits the occasion.

This is a quiet-romance stay with a cultural edge. It is less about privacy from other guests and more about atmosphere, so it suits couples who like stone, olive trees and conversation. Classic Doubles start at about US$850 a night in April and October. For a coastal alternative, read Deià versus the Mallorca coast.

  • Best for: culture-minded couples and milestone trips built around food and walking.
  • Location: Deià, in the Tramuntana, around an hour from Palma by road.
  • Rates: a Classic Double costs from around US$850 a night in late March, April and October and about US$1,500 between May and September, with VAT included and the Balearic tourist tax extra.
  • Don’t miss: El Olivo for the anniversary dinner.

Good to know: the hotel has closed for winter in past years and typically reopens around March, so check the season before choosing dates.

La Residencia, A Belmond Hotel
Deià rewards an unplanned evening, and the walk down to a village dinner is as much a part of the stay as the hotel itself.

When to go

Match the trip to the weather, not just the date. The Maldives is generally driest from about January to March, although it can be busy and costly then. Mauritius is kindest from May to early December, away from the cyclone peak. Santorini and Mallorca are strongest from late spring to early autumn, with early October often better on prices and crowds. Moving the dates by a few weeks can improve both the weather and the rate.

How to ask for an upgrade or a special setup

  • Say it is an anniversary early. Mention the date and the year, and email the resort or your agent instead of hoping a note in a booking form is read.
  • Ask for specifics, not a generic upgrade. A better view, a pool or a quieter spot in the property is easier to grant than a free suite.
  • Request the dinner before you arrive. Private dining needs lead time, and popular evenings fill.
  • Ask what is included and what is charged. Flowers, a cake or a dinner may be complimentary, or they may appear on the bill.
  • Travel on a quieter night or month. Midweek stays and shoulder months give hotels more room to say yes.

The verdict

For a quiet week, I would choose One&Only Reethi Rah. For a rare milestone, North Island. For an elegant, social trip, Royal Palm. For a short caldera celebration, Grace Hotel, and for a slower cultural anniversary, La Residencia. Whichever you pick, tell the hotel early, ask exactly what is arranged, and let one dinner carry the occasion.
