For two adults, a seven-night luxury Maldives holiday usually costs between US$10,000 and US$28,000 before international flights, and US$16,000 to US$20,000 is the budget I’d plan around for a polished week with a good villa, a meal plan, the transfer and a few experiences. At the most exclusive resorts, US$30,000 to US$60,000 or more is entirely possible. The room rate is only the starting point: service charge, tax, Green Tax, transfers and food can add 50% or more to the headline figure.
Prices are indicative and were last updated in October 2026. Rates change with season, exchange rates and availability, so check live prices before booking.

To make those ranges concrete, I’ve priced a typical trip line by line below, for both five and seven nights, at a resort reached by speedboat. Then I’ll go through the costs that move the total most, how to bring it down, and six well-known resorts at different price points.
A worked example: 5 and 7 nights at a speedboat resort
The example is two adults in a beach or entry-level villa at a five-star island within an hour of the airport by speedboat. I’ve used US$1,200 a night for the villa, a sensible mid-season figure for this kind of resort, a half-board meal plan at US$250 per person per day including taxes, and a shared speedboat at US$300 per adult return. Swap in the numbers for your own shortlist and the structure still holds.
| Cost | How it’s worked out | 5 nights | 7 nights |
|---|---|---|---|
| Villa | US$1,200 a night | US$6,000 | US$8,400 |
| Service charge | 10% of the villa rate | US$600 | US$840 |
| Tourism GST | 17%, applied after service charge | US$1,122 | US$1,571 |
| Green Tax | US$12 per adult per night | US$120 | US$168 |
| Half board | US$250 per person per day, taxes included | US$2,500 | US$3,500 |
| Speedboat transfer | US$300 per adult, return | US$600 | US$600 |
| Lunches and extra drinks | About US$120 a day for two | US$600 | US$840 |
| Experiences and spa | A sunset or dolphin cruise, a treatment each, one more outing on the longer stay | US$800 | US$1,100 |
| Tips and small extras | Flexible allowance | US$200 | US$300 |
| Total for two | Before flights and insurance | About US$12,500 | About US$17,300 |
Two things in that table surprise most people. The first is how much the charges add: on a US$6,000 villa bill, service charge and GST together come to more than US$1,700. The second is food. The meal plan is the biggest cost after the villa, and I’d still book one, because on a one-island resort every dinner is a resort dinner, and having it paid in advance makes the rest of the budget predictable.
Notice too that the transfer is a fixed cost. It’s the same US$600 whether you stay five nights or seven, so on a speedboat island it shrinks as a share of the bill the longer you stay. At a seaplane resort the same line could be US$1,900 to US$2,700, which is why short stays and distant atolls rarely mix well.
How the example shifts at three speedboat resorts
Here are the real inputs for three islands near Malé, so you can see where the example moves up or down. Rates are typical starting prices for two before taxes.
| Input | Baros Maldives | Gili Lankanfushi | Waldorf Astoria Ithaafushi |
|---|---|---|---|
| Villa from | About US$650 (May to October) to US$900 (high season) a night | About US$1,000 to US$1,500 a night | About US$2,450 to US$2,750 a night |
| Transfer per adult, return | Around US$260 by speedboat | Around US$300 by speedboat | US$900 by yacht, plus taxes and service (about US$1,160 all-in) |
| Food | Half board from about US$95 or dine-around about US$145 per person per day | Half board often included in offers | Around 11 venues; price a meal plan or credit |
| Where the 7-night example lands | Below the example, especially from May to October | Close to the example, higher in peak months | Well above it, from the villa rate, the yacht and dining |
What has changed in the taxes
If you’re comparing with what friends paid a year or two ago, the government charges have moved. The Green Tax at resorts was US$6 per person per night until the end of 2024; it doubled to US$12 from January 2025. Tourism GST went from 16% to 17% on 1 July 2025, and it applies to the villa, meals, excursions and transfers alike. Neither change is dramatic on its own, but together they add a few hundred dollars to a week for two. You can check the current rates with the Maldives Inland Revenue Authority and its Green Tax guidance.
Luxury Maldives holiday cost at a glance
The worked example sits in the middle of the market. “Luxury” covers a huge range here: a small island with a beach villa and a vast overwater residence with its own pool are both five-star stays, but the bills look nothing alike. For a couple staying seven nights, these are realistic starting budgets:
| Style of trip | Likely cost for two | What that usually buys |
|---|---|---|
| Smart luxury | US$10,000 to US$15,000 | Beach or entry-level water villa, breakfast or half board, speedboat transfer, a few paid activities |
| Classic luxury | US$16,000 to US$28,000 | Water or pool villa, seaplane transfer, a generous dining budget and two or three paid experiences |
| Ultra-luxury | US$30,000 to US$60,000+ | Large pool villa or residence, premium transfer, extensive dining, spa, private excursions and very personal service |
These totals leave out international flights, because where you fly from and in which cabin changes the figure too much to be helpful. They do include the costs people tend to forget until checkout: the resort transfer, service charge, GST, Green Tax, food beyond the meal plan and a sensible amount for activities. New to the country? The Maldives travel guide shows how atolls, islands and resorts relate to one another.
Estimate your Maldives stay
Pick a resort and your dates to see the full bill: room, meals, service, taxes and the transfer, using the same researched rates as this guide.
How the total is built: 10% service charge, then 17% GST on the room, meals and transfers, plus a Green Tax of US$12 per person per night (under-twos exempt). Rates are typical "from" prices for two adults researched in October 2026, not live quotes; children are assumed to share the villa, with meals at half the adult supplement. Always confirm the final price with the resort or booking site.
Why the advertised villa rate is not the final price
Most luxury resorts add a 10% service charge, then the 17% tourism GST on top of that. So a room quoted at US$1,000 actually costs US$1,287, and the Green Tax of US$12 per person per night still comes on top (under-twos don’t pay it). Some booking sites show the all-in figure and others add it at the last step, so compare the final total, not the first number you see.
Read the meal-plan wording just as carefully. Half board usually means breakfast and dinner in named restaurants, sometimes as a set menu or a credit. At Baros, for example, standard half board covers a three-course dinner at Lime, while the dine-around version adds Cayenne, one dinner at The Lighthouse for every four nights, and a bottle of wine with dinner each night. All-inclusive can be good value if you like a cocktail or two, but premium wine, in-villa dining and special restaurants often stay extra.

The expenses that change the budget most
Transfers. This is the line I’d look at first. Baros is about 25 minutes by speedboat from Velana airport and has charged around US$260 per adult return, with some half-board offers including it. A seaplane resort is a different budget altogether: Soneva lists its 2026 shared return seaplane at US$1,300 per adult, JOALI’s shared return seaplane is about US$1,350 per adult, and Waldorf Astoria Maldives charges US$900 per adult for its return yacht before taxes and service. The speedboat versus seaplane guide covers the practical side.

Season and villa category. Christmas, New Year and the driest winter weeks cost the most, and festive dates can bring compulsory gala dinners or minimum stays. May to October usually brings better offers, with more chance of showers and wind. A beach villa often gives you more space and privacy for the money than the first overwater category. If you want both, spend most of the trip on the beach and move overwater for the last two or three nights. The best time to visit the Maldives goes through it month by month.
Dining, drinks and experiences. Private sandbank dinners, diving, motorised water sports and spa treatments can each add hundreds of dollars. My advice is to pick the one or two experiences that will define the trip for you, book those, and set a fixed allowance for everything else. On a honeymoon, ask what the resort includes: many add a bottle of sparkling wine on arrival or a special dinner, and Baros has offered both as part of its honeymoon benefits.
Flights and insurance. From the Gulf or India the flight is the easy part: around four hours from Dubai, with several direct departures a day and economy fares that are small next to the resort bill. From Europe or further afield, long-haul business class can become one of the biggest costs, so price it separately. Comprehensive insurance deserves its own line too, especially with large non-refundable deposits and weather-dependent transfers.
How to lower the cost without making the trip feel cheap
The biggest saving is the logistics. A good speedboat island close to Malé can cost less overall than a cheaper-looking room at a distant resort once the seaplane is added. Travelling outside the festive season and the driest winter weeks also opens up lower rates, free meal-plan upgrades and transfer offers.
Before you book, compare three versions of the same stay: a beach villa with breakfast, a beach villa with half board, and a split between beach and water villas. A beach villa for the whole week is often the best value. If the overwater experience is what you’re picturing, upgrading for the final nights keeps the sense of occasion without paying the premium every night. Then ask for a written total covering the villa, meal plan, transfer, service charge, GST, Green Tax and any festive supplement, and add a daily allowance for everything else. That one step prevents most checkout surprises.
Length of stay is the other lever. As the worked example shows, two extra nights add about US$4,800 to the bill. If you’re flying in from nearby, five or six nights works well, and every visitor gets a free 30-day tourist visa on arrival, so there’s nothing to arrange in advance beyond the online traveller declaration. To weigh nights against cost, read how many days to spend in the Maldives.
Which Maldives resorts fit each budget?
These six resorts cover the range from smart luxury to the top of the market. For each one I’ve focused on the lines that change your total: the transfer price, the villa you’d realistically book, typical nightly rates and the way meals are charged. Rates are published or widely quoted starting prices for two before taxes, and they swing a lot with the season.
Baros Maldives: best for a classic island stay on a smart-luxury budget
On cost, Baros starts with an advantage: it sits in North Malé Atoll near enough to the airport that the boat transfer is one of the cheaper ones on this list. It has a lively house reef you can reach straight from the beach, and its beach, water and pool villas all sit on a compact island. Its dine-around meal plan includes wine with dinner, which makes the food budget easy to fix in advance. It suits couples who want a classic Maldives stay without seaplane prices.
- Best for: couples on a first trip, and stays of five nights or fewer.
- Transfer: about 25 minutes by speedboat; around US$260 per adult return, and some half-board offers include it.
- Rates: Deluxe Beach Villas run from around US$650 a night in low season (May to October) to around US$900 in high season, before taxes and service; peak festive dates cost more.
- Food: half board from around US$95 per person per day, or dine-around from around US$145 with a bottle of wine at dinner each night.
Gili Lankanfushi: best for big overwater villas without a seaplane
Gili Lankanfushi is the obvious choice if you want an overwater villa and a short boat ride. All of its villas are overwater, and you get a lot of space for the money: about 210 square metres in the entry Villa Suite. A dedicated “Mr or Ms Friday” butler is part of every stay, so there’s no extra to pay for that level of service, and the barefoot “no news, no shoes” style keeps things relaxed. If cost is no object, the boat-access Private Reserve is frequently called the world’s biggest overwater villa.
- Best for: couples who want space and privacy close to Malé.
- Transfer: a 20-minute speedboat ride costing roughly US$300 return per adult, and packages frequently include it.
- Rates: a Villa Suite is from around US$1,000 a night in low season (May to October) and around US$1,500 in high season, before taxes and service. Packages for two with half board and transfers come up often, so check live prices against the room-only rate.
- Food: half board is available and frequently included in seasonal offers.

Six Senses Laamu: best for divers and surfers in the far south
Being the sole luxury resort in Laamu Atoll is the appeal, and also why getting there adds to the bill. The money buys ocean time: manta dives at Hithadhoo Corner, waves at the Yin Yang break, and a resort that puts real effort into sustainability and marine conservation. It suits couples who’ll use the ocean every day and are staying long enough to justify the journey.
- Best for: diving, surfing and stays of a week or more.
- Transfer: the standard route is a seaplane of about 65 minutes at US$1,209 return per adult, taxes included; a domestic flight to Kadhdhoo and a brief speedboat hop can be requested, but that fare isn’t published.
- Rates: Lagoon Water Villas from around US$1,100 a night in low season (May to October) and around US$1,550 in high season, and pool water villas from about US$1,800 to US$2,600, all before taxes and service; there are just under 100 beach and overwater villas.
Good to know: you lose much of your arrival and departure days to the journey, so you’d be paying for nights you barely use on a short stay; I wouldn’t book fewer than five.
JOALI Maldives: best for art, design and a private pool in every villa
JOALI, in Raa Atoll, puts art and design first, displaying pieces by international artists across the island, and its restaurants include Saoke, a Japanese-Peruvian room designed by Noriyoshi Muramatsu. For budgeting, the useful detail is that a private pool, a butler and breakfast all come as standard with every villa. It suits couples who want the design-led, high-service end of the Maldives.
- Best for: design lovers and couples who value service.
- Transfer: a seaplane of around 45 minutes, with a shared return of about US$1,350 per adult.
- Rates: the entry Beach Villa with Pool costs from around US$1,650 a night in low season (May to October) and around US$2,500 in high season, before taxes and service.
- Food: breakfast is included; lunch and dinner are extra unless an offer adds half board, so budget for them from the start.
Soneva Jani: best for a once-in-a-lifetime splurge
Soneva Jani, in Noonu Atoll, is where Maldives budgets go to their most extravagant: overwater villas whose decks have water slides, and bedroom roofs that slide open for stargazing from the pillow. It’s a destination in itself, and a budget decision more than a value one.
- Best for: milestone trips where the villa is the experience.
- Transfer: a seaplane flight of about 40 minutes. Most of the year the shared return costs US$1,300 per adult; from early May to the end of September 2026 the price falls to US$950.
- Rates: a one-bedroom Water Retreat runs from around US$2,600 a night in low season (May to October) to around US$3,500 in high season, before taxes and service; the biggest multi-bedroom retreats are priced on request, so check live prices.
Good to know: on the transfer alone, travelling in the May to September window saves US$700 for two.

Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi: best for big-resort choice and Hilton points
Waldorf Astoria Ithaafushi, in South Malé Atoll, is big, and that affects your food bill: there are around 11 restaurants and bars, one of them up in the treetops, so a dining credit or meal plan is worth pricing. Every villa has an infinity pool. It suits couples who like variety and polished, big-hotel service. Points collectors can also cut the cost, since this is one of very few top-end resorts in the country bookable with Hilton Honors.
- Best for: variety, families and points collectors.
- Transfer: about 40 minutes by yacht; the shared return is US$900 per adult before taxes and service charge, or about US$1,160 once they’re added.
- Rates: King Beach Villas with Pool from around US$2,450 a night in low season (May to October) and around US$2,750 in high season, before taxes and service, or a Hilton Honors points redemption (check current points levels).
Good to know: with that many restaurants, price up a meal plan or dining credit before you go.

So how much should you budget?
For a polished seven-night trip for two, US$16,000 to US$20,000 before flights is a comfortable working budget. It covers a strong villa, taxes, the transfer, good dining and a few experiences. The worked example lands at about US$12,500 for five nights and US$17,300 for seven at a speedboat resort. A beach villa and careful dining can bring a full week down to US$10,000 to US$15,000, while a marquee pool villa or ultra-luxury island can pass US$30,000 easily.
