The best Maldives resorts for couples are the ones that match how the two of you actually like to holiday. A pair of divers, a pair of keen cooks and a couple marking their twentieth anniversary want very different islands. This guide is for couples who are not on honeymoon (for that, see the Maldives honeymoon guide), and it starts with the islands where children are not part of the picture at all.
Quick answer: the right resort for your kind of couple
| If you are… | My pick | Also consider | Typical entry rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Looking for a child-free island | Hurawalhi | Kudadoo | From around US$750 |
| Happy with older children around, as long as it’s quiet | COMO Cocoa Island | Gili Lankanfushi | From around US$750 |
| Planning the trip around dinner | Patina Maldives | Waldorf Astoria Ithaafushi | From around US$1,450 |
| Divers or keen snorkellers | Six Senses Laamu | Vakkaru | From around US$900 |
| Watching the total cost | Niyama Private Islands | Baros | From around US$650 |
| Celebrating an anniversary or milestone | Soneva Jani | The St. Regis, JOALI | From around US$1,650 |
Prices are indicative and were last updated in October 2026. Rates change with season, exchange rates and availability, so check live prices before booking.
Rates are per villa per night before the 10% service charge, 17% GST and the US$12 per person nightly Green Tax. For a sense of the full week, a comfortable seven nights for two typically runs US$16,000–US$20,000 excluding flights; the Maldives cost guide breaks that down.
Adults-only islands
Only a handful of luxury resorts in the Maldives set a minimum age of 15. The two below are run by the same company, sit side by side in Lhaviyani Atoll and share a seaplane route, but they are very different stays.
Hurawalhi Maldives: best adults-only resort with a social side
Hurawalhi is a 90-villa island where every guest is an adult, so the pool, the bars and the beach stay calm without feeling empty. There are enough restaurants to fill a week, including Kashibo, Canneli and a Champagne Pavilion, plus a dive centre and the Duniye Spa. Its headline is 5.8 Undersea Restaurant, an all-glass dining room below the lagoon; dinner costs around US$315 per person before taxes and is not part of the all-inclusive plan. This is the island I would choose for couples who like a cocktail bar and a few conversations with other guests.
- Best for: couples who want no children and some life in the evenings
- Transfer: seaplane to Lhaviyani Atoll, about 40 minutes
- Rates: about US$750 a night from May to October, rising to roughly US$1,100 between November and April (taxes and service extra), though rates vary widely by date, so check live prices; seven-night half-board offers with seaplane transfers have been advertised from around US$9,500 per couple
- Don’t miss: lunch at 5.8, which costs less than dinner and has better light

Kudadoo Maldives: best adults-only splurge
Kudadoo is Hurawalhi’s tiny neighbour: 15 overwater residences, a minimum age of 15 in the Ocean Residences and a rate that covers almost everything. Meals, drinks, spa treatments, diving and excursions are included, and you can also eat at Hurawalhi’s Aquarium and Canneli restaurants when you want a change of scene. For a couple, that removes the daily negotiation over whether a second massage or another bottle is worth it. The scale is the point: there is no nightlife, just a central Retreat with a restaurant, a wine and cheese cellar, a pool and the spa.
- Best for: couples who want total quiet and no bills
- Transfer: seaplane to Lhaviyani Atoll, about 40 minutes
- Rates: about US$3,300 a night from May to October, rising to roughly US$4,150 between November and April (taxes and service extra; all-inclusive)
- Don’t miss: the Himalayan salt room in the spa
Good to know: 5.8 Undersea Restaurant sits on Hurawalhi, a short boat hop away, so ask whether it is covered on your dates before booking a table.

Adults-focused islands
These resorts accept children but are small, quiet and booked mainly by couples. Outside school holidays, the difference from an adults-only island is slight.
COMO Cocoa Island: best for couples who want calm and wellness
COMO Cocoa Island has 33 villas, all on stilts over a shallow South Malé lagoon, and the whole resort is built around rest. COMO Shambhala runs the spa, yoga and healthy menus, and the beachfront restaurant, Ufaa, mixes Indian and Mediterranean cooking with local seafood. Couples can book a dinner on the sandbank or a film night under the stars. The small scale means one main restaurant, which suits a four- or five-night stay best.
- Best for: a restorative break with yoga and early nights
- Transfer: about 40 minutes by speedboat
- Rates: about US$750 a night from May to October, rising to roughly US$1,150 between November and April (taxes and service extra; half board included); rates vary widely by date, so check live prices
- Don’t miss: a COMO Shambhala massage on arrival day
Gili Lankanfushi: best for barefoot couples near Malé
Gili Lankanfushi’s motto is “no news, no shoes”, and it fits: wooden walkways, timber villas over the lagoon and a relaxed crowd that is mostly couples. Every villa comes with a Mr or Ms Friday host who can arrange a sunset dhoni sail, dinner on a sandbank or a night sleeping out on your rooftop deck. The island is only 20 minutes from Malé by speedboat, so it works well for a short break tacked onto a trip to Sri Lanka or the Gulf.
- Best for: relaxed couples who prefer rustic style over glamour
- Transfer: about 20 minutes by speedboat
- Rates: about US$1,000 a night from May to October, rising to roughly US$1,500 between November and April (taxes and service extra)
- Don’t miss: a night on the rooftop daybed under the stars

For couples who travel for food
On a small island you eat in the same few places every night, so variety becomes the main luxury after a few days. These two resorts have the deepest restaurant line-ups in this guide.
Patina Maldives, Fari Islands: best for adventurous eaters
Patina runs around a dozen dining concepts, and they are distinct from each other: Kōen blends Japanese and Scandinavian cooking in a tasting menu, Brasa is an open-fire steakhouse, Wok Society covers China’s regional cuisines and Roots serves plant-based dishes from the island’s permaculture garden. Add the Fari Beach Club, a gelato cart and a burger truck, and you could eat somewhere new every night for a fortnight. The speedboat transfer is a bonus for foodies on long-haul flights, because a late arrival still makes it to the island for dinner.
- Best for: couples who would rather book restaurants than excursions
- Transfer: about 45 minutes by speedboat
- Rates: about US$1,450 a night from May to October, rising to roughly US$2,500 between November and April (taxes and service extra; breakfast included)
- Don’t miss: the Kōen tasting menu on a night when you have nothing planned the next morning

Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi: best for big-name dining
Waldorf Astoria spreads over three linked islands in South Malé Atoll and has 11 dining venues. Highlights include Terra, where dinner is served in bamboo pods raised into the trees, The Ledge by Australian barbecue chef Dave Pynt, an overwater Zuma for contemporary Japanese, and The Rock, a wine cellar cut among boulders. Every villa has a private pool, and the resort’s yachts handle transfers, so there are no daylight cut-offs. Families do come here, so couples should ask for a villa away from the kids’ club.
- Best for: couples who want famous kitchens and lots of choice
- Transfer: about 40–45 minutes by yacht
- Rates: about US$2,450 a night from May to October, rising to roughly US$2,750 between November and April (taxes and service extra; breakfast included)
- Don’t miss: dinner at The Ledge, cooked in Dave Pynt’s custom-built wood-fired oven

For diving couples
Divers should choose the atoll first. Manta rays, sharks and whale sharks gather in specific places at specific times of year, and resort dive centres vary widely in quality.
Six Senses Laamu: best for serious divers
Six Senses Laamu is the only resort in Laamu Atoll, so the dive sites are not shared with boats from other islands. Its in-house centre, Deep Blue Divers, runs PADI courses and daily trips, including to Hithadhoo Corner, a manta point studied with the Manta Trust, and it was the first Maldives resort to offer blackwater night diving. The resort’s Maldives Underwater Initiative team helped create six marine protected areas in the atoll. Non-divers are well looked after too, with surfing in season and a strong spa.
- Best for: certified divers and couples learning together
- Transfer: domestic flight to Kadhdhoo of 35 to 45 minutes, then a 20-minute speedboat
- Rates: about US$1,100 a night from May to October, rising to roughly US$1,550 between November and April (taxes and service extra; breakfast included)
- Don’t miss: a blackwater dive, if you are qualified

Vakkaru Maldives: best for manta season in Baa Atoll
Vakkaru sits inside the Baa Atoll UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, within reach of Hanifaru Bay, where manta rays and sometimes whale sharks gather to feed between May and November, usually peaking from late July to early October. Scuba is not permitted inside Hanifaru itself, so the encounter is a snorkel, which suits a couple where only one of you dives. Every one of the resort’s villas has a private pool, and the restaurants include Isoletta for Italian and Onu for Asian dishes. It is a calmer, more natural island than some of its Baa neighbours.
- Best for: couples timing a trip around the manta season
- Transfer: about 30 minutes by seaplane
- Rates: about US$900 a night from May to October, rising to roughly US$1,400 between November and April (taxes and service extra; breakfast included)
- Don’t miss: a Hanifaru Bay trip in August or September
Good to know: manta season falls in the wetter southwest monsoon, so expect some grey days alongside the wildlife. The guide to the best time to visit the Maldives explains the trade between weather and marine life.

For value-conscious couples
Value in the Maldives comes from the total, not the nightly rate. A cheaper villa on a remote island can cost more once seaplane fares and meals are added, while a pricier room near Malé can come out ahead.
Niyama Private Islands: best entry price for a full-scale resort
Niyama has some of the lowest entry rates in this guide, with beach villas from around US$900 a night, yet it has the facilities of a much bigger resort. The two connected islands are named Chill and Play; couples should ask for a villa on Chill, away from the kids’ club. Evenings can include Subsix, a club and restaurant six metres below the surface, Edge, reached by boat half a kilometre out to sea, or Nest in the treetops. From March to October the house surf break, Vodi, gives surfers a wave on the doorstep.
- Best for: couples who want variety without the top-tier price
- Transfer: about 40–45 minutes by seaplane to Dhaalu Atoll
- Rates: about US$900 a night from May to October, rising to roughly US$1,350 between November and April (taxes and service extra; breakfast included)
- Don’t miss: a drink at Subsix, surrounded by reef fish
Baros Maldives: best value on a short trip
Baros has one of the lower nightly rates in this guide, and it saves money elsewhere too. The 25-minute speedboat transfer costs far less than a seaplane, needs no airport hotel after a late arrival, and lets you spend four nights on the island without losing a day to travel at each end. Children under eight are not accepted, the house reef is close to shore for free snorkelling, and the restaurants (Lime, the overwater Cayenne Grill and the Lighthouse) give enough choice for a short stay.
- Best for: four or five nights without a seaplane
- Transfer: about 25 minutes by speedboat
- Rates: beach villas from around US$650 a night in low season (May to October) and around US$900 in high season, before taxes and service
- Don’t miss: the house reef at slack tide
For anniversaries and celebrations
A milestone trip earns the bigger villa and the dinner you will talk about later. These three resorts are the most theatrical in this guide, and all are family-friendly, so book outside school holidays for the quietest stay. The best luxury islands for an anniversary trip covers options beyond the Maldives.
Soneva Jani: best for a big-number anniversary
Soneva Jani’s water villas have slides into the lagoon and bedroom roofs that open to the sky, which is the kind of detail that makes a fortieth or a silver anniversary feel different from an ordinary holiday. Overseas, an overwater restaurant built around an open, in-the-round kitchen, gives dinner a sense of occasion, and the resort’s outdoor cinema shows films over the water. Soneva’s prices are among the highest in the country, so this is a once-a-decade choice.
- Best for: a landmark anniversary
- Transfer: about 40 minutes by seaplane to Noonu Atoll
- Rates: about US$2,600 a night from May to October, rising to roughly US$3,500 between November and April (taxes and service extra)
- Don’t miss: stargazing from bed with the roof open
The St. Regis Maldives Vommuli: best for a polished celebration
The St. Regis suits couples who like ceremony: a butler for every villa, the brand’s evening champagne sabrage, and the Whale Bar for cocktails above the lagoon. The Iridium Spa sits over the water, which makes a couples’ treatment feel like an event. With 77 villas and a 45-minute seaplane ride into Dhaalu Atoll, it is formal but not crowded.
- Best for: couples who enjoy dressing for dinner
- Transfer: about 45 minutes by seaplane
- Rates: about US$1,800 a night from May to October, rising to roughly US$2,800 between November and April (taxes and service extra); rates vary widely by date, so check live prices
- Don’t miss: sunset sabrage, then dinner at the Whale Bar
JOALI Maldives: best for couples who love art and design
JOALI has 73 villas, all with private pools, and an island dotted with commissioned art and sculpture, so a walk to dinner feels like a gallery visit. A Jadugar butler can set up a private dinner on the beach or your deck, which is the easiest way to mark the date without sharing the moment with other tables. Choose a sunset water villa for evening light, or a beach villa if you want more space and shade.
- Best for: a stylish celebration with a creative edge
- Transfer: about 45 minutes by seaplane to Raa Atoll
- Rates: about US$1,650 a night from May to October, rising to roughly US$2,500 between November and April (taxes and service extra; breakfast included)
- Don’t miss: a private dinner arranged by your Jadugar

Before you book
Check the transfer first. Seaplanes fly in daylight only, so a flight landing in Malé after mid-afternoon means a night near the airport for Hurawalhi, Kudadoo, Vakkaru, Niyama, Soneva Jani, the St. Regis and JOALI. The speedboat and yacht islands (Baros, Gili, COMO, Patina and Waldorf Astoria) avoid that. The speedboat vs seaplane guide sets out the costs. Then decide where to sleep: the best overwater villas in the Maldives compares the villas themselves, and the best adults-only island resorts covers child-free options in other countries.
Compare couples resorts and check rates
| Resort | Couple type | Transfer | Booking |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hurawalhi Maldives | Adults-only, sociable | Seaplane | Check rates |
| Kudadoo Maldives | Guests 15+, all-inclusive | Seaplane | Check rates |
| COMO Cocoa Island | Calm and wellness | Speedboat | Check rates |
| Gili Lankanfushi | Barefoot and relaxed | Speedboat | Check rates |
| Patina Maldives | Foodies | Speedboat | Check rates |
| Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi | Foodies | Yacht | Check rates |
| Six Senses Laamu | Divers | Flight and speedboat | Check rates |
| Vakkaru Maldives | Manta season | Seaplane | Check rates |
| Niyama Private Islands | Value with variety | Seaplane | Check rates |
| Baros Maldives | Short-trip value | Speedboat | Check rates |
| Soneva Jani | Landmark anniversary | Seaplane | Check rates |
| The St. Regis Maldives | Polished celebration | Seaplane | Check rates |
| JOALI Maldives | Art and design | Seaplane | Check rates |
My verdict: if children on the island would bother you, book Hurawalhi, or Kudadoo if the budget stretches. Food-led couples should go to Patina, divers to Six Senses Laamu, and anyone watching the total should compare Niyama’s low entry rate with Baros’ cheap transfer. For a milestone, Soneva Jani is the one to beat.
