The best Maldives honeymoon is seven nights at one well-chosen resort, booked for January to April, with a villa that suits how you both like to spend the day and a transfer that fits your flights. Get those four decisions right and the rest is easy: the Maldives does privacy, warm water and quiet service better than almost anywhere. This guide covers the resorts that suit newlyweds best, how honeymoon perks actually work, which villa to book, what a realistic budget looks like and how to shape the week.

Quick answer: the best Maldives honeymoon resorts
If you want a short transfer and a classic romantic island, look at Baros, Gili Lankanfushi or COMO Cocoa Island, all reached by speedboat. If you have seven nights or more and want a statement villa, Soneva Jani, JOALI and Kudadoo justify the seaplane. If you worry that a small island will get repetitive, One&Only Reethi Rah and Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi give you far more space and dining choice.
| Resort | Best for | Transfer from Malé | Typical rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Baros Maldives | A short, classic romantic stay | 25 min speedboat | From around US$650 a night |
| Gili Lankanfushi | Huge overwater villas, barefoot mood | 20 min speedboat | From around US$1,000 a night |

Is the Maldives right for your honeymoon?
The Maldives suits couples who want to stop moving after the wedding. Almost every luxury resort occupies its own island, so the beach, restaurants, spa and dive centre are a short barefoot walk from the villa, and nobody needs to drive, plan or pack until checkout. Private dining, sunset cruises and reef snorkelling are built into the resort model, which is why the country remains the default luxury honeymoon for so many couples.
It suits you less if you want restaurants outside the hotel, road trips, nightlife or hiking. Every meal and drink is charged at resort prices, and leaving the island usually means a paid excursion. If you want scenery and exploration as well as beaches, read my comparison of the Maldives vs Seychelles for a honeymoon or the wider shortlist of best luxury honeymoon islands for first-time visitors. Best months for a Maldives honeymoon
January to April is the dry northeast monsoon season and the safest choice if a sunny week matters most: calm seas, high visibility and the most dependable sunsets. February and March are the strongest all-round months. They are also the most expensive, and the Christmas, New Year and Easter weeks carry minimum stays and compulsory gala dinners at many resorts.
May to October brings the wetter southwest monsoon. Showers tend to come in bursts with bright spells between them, and rates can fall by a third or more, which makes a bigger villa affordable. This season also has upsides of its own: manta rays and whale sharks gather in Hanifaru Bay in Baa Atoll from roughly June to November. November and December are transitional and often good value before the festive peak. To match your wedding date to the weather, see the best time to visit the Maldives.
How many nights, and speedboat or seaplane?
Seven nights is the right length for most honeymoons after a long-haul flight. Five nights works at a speedboat resort near Malé; a remote seaplane island deserves six or seven because transfers eat into the first and last days. I wouldn’t split a honeymoon between two resorts unless you have nine nights or more. My guide to how many days to spend in the Maldives goes into more detail.
If your honeymoon flight lands in the evening, a speedboat resort in North or South Malé Atoll can still get you to the island that night, since the boats run around the clock. Seaplanes operate in daylight only, so landing in Malé after about 3.30pm can mean spending your first night as newlyweds near the airport. Pack with the seaplane in mind too: Trans Maldivian Airways gives each passenger 20kg in the hold and 5kg in the cabin, and charges for anything over. Seaplane transfers typically add about US$1,000–US$2,700 per couple return. The speedboat vs seaplane guide explains the practical differences.
Beach villa or water villa?
An overwater villa gives you the view most couples picture: open horizon, a deck, steps into the lagoon and often a glass floor panel. It is also sunnier, windier and closer to neighbouring decks than photographs suggest, and some jetties sit far from the house reef. A beach villa gives more shade, a strip of private sand and usually better privacy for the same money. Both work; what decides it is whether you want to swim from the villa or walk to the beach.
A split stay inside one resort is a good compromise: start on the beach and finish overwater so the week builds towards the iconic room. Ask the resort to move your bags while you are out. A private pool is worth paying for if you will spend long afternoons at the villa or if the lagoon is very shallow at low tide; it adds less where the water off your deck is deep and calm.
Meal plans. Half board is the sensible default for most honeymooners because breakfasts are lavish and lunch is often light. Full board and all-inclusive bring cost certainty, but check whether they cover à la carte restaurants, in-villa dining, premium wines and minibar drinks. Bed and breakfast suits couples who want to try several restaurants and don’t drink much.
Honeymoon perks and offers: how they work
Most luxury resorts offer honeymoon benefits, but the rules are strict. Baros currently asks for a minimum of four nights, travel within six months of the wedding and a legal marriage certificate, and in return adds sparkling wine and chocolates on arrival, a candlelit dinner, a framed photo and a romantic turndown. JOALI uses similar six-month conditions on its romance packages. Typical perks elsewhere include a bottle of champagne, a couples’ spa credit, a sunset cruise or a private dinner.
Treat these as a bonus, never the reason to pick a resort. Much more money is saved through stay-pay deals (seven nights for the price of five or six), early-booking discounts of 15–30% and offers that bundle transfers and half board. Send your certificate in advance and ask for every inclusion in writing.
The best Maldives resorts for a honeymoon
Baros Maldives: best for a short, classic romantic stay
Baros is one of the oldest resorts in the country and has been rebuilt over the years into a small island of about 75 villas, with dense greenery and a house reef close to the shore. Its scale is the appeal: you can walk the island in minutes, yet there are enough restaurants, from the overwater Lighthouse to private dinners on the Piano Deck jetty, to fill a week. Water Pool Villas add a plunge pool to the classic overwater set-up.
- Best for: honeymoons of four to seven nights, couples new to the Maldives and keen snorkellers
- Transfer: 25 minutes by speedboat, available day and night
- Rates: Deluxe Villas from around US$650 a night in the May–October low season and around US$900 in the November–April high season, before tax and service
- Don’t miss: a private dinner on the Piano Deck at the end of its own jetty

Gili Lankanfushi: best for overwater space close to Malé
For a honeymoon spent mostly in the villa, Gili Lankanfushi is hard to beat on space: its starting Villa Suites measure about 210 square metres, among the biggest standard overwater villas in the country, with an open-air living room, a broad sundeck and a shower with a glass floor. The mood is deliberately barefoot and unpolished in the best sense, with each villa looked after by a personal host. Further out in the lagoon, the Crusoe Residences are reached only by boat, which is as private as overwater living gets. The resort arranges sunset dhoni cruises, dinners in secluded spots and nights sleeping under the stars.
- Best for: newlyweds after a big overwater villa and a short speedboat ride
- Transfer: about 20 minutes by speedboat
- Rates: Villa Suites from around US$1,000 a night in the May–October low season and around US$1,500 in the November–April high season, before tax and service
- Don’t miss: a night sleeping out under the stars on a deck

COMO Cocoa Island: best for wellness and quiet
COMO Cocoa Island is a slim island in South Malé Atoll with just over 30 overwater suites, several shaped like traditional dhoni boats with loft bedrooms. It is one of the calmest resorts in the country, with no big pools or party bar, and the COMO Shambhala Retreat runs yoga, Ayurvedic treatments and a hydrotherapy pool. Ufaa, the main restaurant, mixes local seafood with South Indian flavours, and the resort sets up private sandbank dinners.
- Best for: a slower honeymoon built around yoga, spa time and healthy food
- Transfer: about 40 minutes by speedboat
- Rates: from around US$1,000 a night for a Dhoni Loft Water Villa in low season, or around US$750 (US$1,150 in high season) for a Dhoni Water Villa, half board included, before tax and service; rates vary widely by date, so check live prices
- Don’t miss: a COMO Shambhala couples’ treatment followed by a sandbank dinner

Soneva Jani: best for a once-in-a-lifetime water villa
Soneva Jani’s Water Retreats, spread across a huge Noonu Atoll lagoon, are the reason couples save up for it: each has a private pool and a vast deck, and many categories add a slide down to the water and a bedroom roof you can open to the stars. Even the smallest villas are very large by Maldives standards. The island also has an overwater observatory, an open-air cinema and a chocolate room that is included in the stay. It is expensive, and it rewards a longer stay because the seaplane is part of the cost.
- Best for: a week-long honeymoon in which the villa is the main event
- Transfer: around 45 minutes by seaplane, daylight only
- Rates: One-Bedroom Water Retreats from around US$2,600 a night in the May–October low season and around US$3,500 in the high season, before tax and service
- Don’t miss: opening the retractable roof on a clear night
Good to know: not every Water Retreat has a slide. If it matters to you, book a category that explicitly includes one.

JOALI Maldives: best for design and private pools
JOALI is an art-led resort of 73 beach and overwater villas on Muravandhoo Island in Raa Atoll, nearly all with private pools. Commissioned works by more than a dozen artists are placed around the island, and there is an art studio with a resident artist. Service is highly polished, and its romance packages are among the more generous in the country.
- Best for: design lovers, private-pool water villas, polished service
- Transfer: 45 minutes by seaplane
- Rates: Water Villas with Pool from around US$1,850 a night in the May–October low season, breakfast included, before tax and service
- Don’t miss: a session in the art studio, then sunset from your pool

Kudadoo Maldives: best for an adults-only, all-inclusive honeymoon
Kudadoo is a tiny private island in Lhaviyani Atoll with only 15 overwater residences, each around 300 square metres with a private pool. Ocean Residences take guests aged 15 and over, and the “anything, anytime, anywhere” approach means there are no set menus and no bills: food, drinks, spa treatments, diving and excursions are covered by the rate. The resort is fully solar-powered, and a five-minute boat ride takes you to its sister island, Hurawalhi, for a change of scene. The all-in price looks high, but it removes every bill at checkout.
- Best for: honeymooners who want complete privacy and nothing to pay at checkout
- Transfer: around 40 minutes by seaplane
- Rates: from around US$3,300 a night in the May–October low season and around US$4,150 in the November–April high season, all-inclusive, before tax and service; three-night minimum
- Don’t miss: a dinner at the 5.8 Undersea Restaurant on Hurawalhi

Hurawalhi Maldives: best adults-only value
Hurawalhi is an adults-only resort of about 90 beach and ocean villas in Lhaviyani Atoll, and its draw for honeymooners is 5.8 Undersea, an all-glass restaurant 5.8 metres below the surface. Rates are far lower than most seaplane resorts, and all-inclusive plans are available. It is the obvious choice if you want the seaplane experience and an adults-only atmosphere on a smart-luxury budget.
- Best for: a quiet, adults-only honeymoon at a gentler price
- Transfer: around 40 minutes by seaplane
- Rates: from around US$750 a night in the May–October low season and around US$1,100 in the November–April high season, before tax and service; rates vary widely by date, so check live prices
- Don’t miss: the tasting menu at 5.8 Undersea; book it before you arrive

One&Only Reethi Rah: best for space and variety
Some couples worry about a week on a tiny island, and Reethi Rah answers that: in North Malé Atoll, it has roughly six kilometres of shore and a dozen beaches, so there’s always somewhere new to walk to. There are eight restaurants and bars, a large spa, a PADI dive centre and tennis, which helps if one of you gets restless on a small island. Beach Villas are set back in thick planting, and many have private pools. The yacht transfer avoids seaplane timing.
- Best for: newlyweds who like having plenty of beaches, facilities and options
- Transfer: about 45 minutes by luxury yacht
- Rates: Beach Villas from around US$1,950 a night in the mid-July to mid-December low season and around US$2,700 from mid-January to mid-April, breakfast included, before tax and service
- Don’t miss: an afternoon on one of the quieter beaches with a picnic from the kitchen

Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi: best for food and celebrations
Every villa at Ithaafushi has its own pool, and the resort covers three linked islands in South Malé Atoll. Its 11 restaurants and bars are the main reason to choose it: Zuma serves Japanese food over the water, Terra seats couples in bamboo dining pods up in the trees, and there are Chinese, Middle Eastern and grill options. It is large by Maldives standards, but the villas are well spread out.
- Best for: honeymooners who plan the trip around dinners and celebrations
- Transfer: 40–45 minutes by shared yacht, about US$900 return per adult plus 28.7% tax and service
- Rates: from around US$2,450 a night in the May–October low season and around US$2,750 in the November–April high season, breakfast included, before tax and service
- Don’t miss: dinner in a treetop pod at Terra

Romantic experiences to plan
Sandbank dinner. A private dinner on a sandbank is the Maldives’ signature romantic splurge: a boat drops you on an empty strip of sand with a table, lanterns and a chef. Expect from around US$500 per couple at mid-range resorts and well over US$1,000 at the top end. Book it for early in the week so you can move it if the weather turns.

Sunset cruise. A traditional dhoni or yacht cruise at dusk, often with dolphins, costs from around US$150–US$400 per couple shared, and much more for a private boat with champagne. It fits easily into a lazy afternoon.

Other ideas. A couples’ spa ritual, a guided reef snorkel, a manta trip in season or a private beach cinema. One planned experience a day is plenty; the empty hours are part of the honeymoon.

How much does a Maldives honeymoon cost?
For two adults over seven nights, excluding international flights, these are realistic totals including villa, taxes, transfers, meals, drinks and a few experiences. My Maldives cost guide breaks every line down.
| Style | 7-night total for two | What it buys |
|---|---|---|
| Smart luxury | US$10,000–US$15,000 | Hurawalhi or a speedboat resort, beach villa, half board, shoulder season |
| Comfortable | US$16,000–US$20,000 | Baros, Gili Lankanfushi or COMO Cocoa Island, water villa, half board |
| Ultra | US$30,000–US$60,000+ | Soneva Jani, JOALI, Kudadoo or Reethi Rah, pool villa, peak season |
Ask for an itemised quote that includes the 17% GST, 10% service charge, Green Tax, transfers and any compulsory festive dinners. A cheaper remote resort can cost more than a speedboat resort once two seaplane seats are added. Insure the full non-refundable value of the trip, and complete the free IMUGA Traveller Declaration within 96 hours of arrival; check the Maldives Immigration guidance before you travel.
A relaxed seven-night honeymoon itinerary
- Days 1–2: arrive, unpack, sleep. Walk the island, join the introductory reef snorkel and book the restaurants and the sandbank dinner.
- Day 3: a guided snorkel or dive in the morning, a slow afternoon, a sunset cruise.
- Day 4: couples’ spa treatment and an early night.
- Day 5: the sandbank dinner, or a manta excursion in season.
- Days 6–7: move to the water villa if you have split the stay, repeat whatever you enjoyed most and keep the last full day free.

| COMO Cocoa Island | Wellness, quiet, sandbank dining | Speedboat | Check rates |

My verdict: for a first honeymoon with an evening arrival, I’d book Gili Lankanfushi or Baros, because the speedboat transfer and the villas suit a five-to-seven-night stay. If you have a full week and the budget, Soneva Jani or Kudadoo turn the villa itself into the occasion. Couples who want an adults-only island with a seaplane arrival at a lower price should look at Hurawalhi, and anyone who worries about getting bored on a small island will be happier at Reethi Rah or Ithaafushi.
