Of the best luxury resorts in the Maldives, Gili Lankanfushi is the best all-round choice: huge overwater villas, a personal butler, a relaxed barefoot style and a 20-minute speedboat transfer that keeps you off the seaplane timetable. Every resort on this list is beautiful, though. What separates them is what they’re best at: a house reef, a short transfer, a great kids’ club or a restaurant worth the seaplane. The most expensive island isn’t necessarily the right one, and the right one for a honeymoon is rarely the right one for a family.

This list is built on research into each resort’s transfers, villas, restaurants, activities and current prices, using the resorts’ own published information and reputable travel sources.

The quick answer: which Maldives luxury resort is best?

Gili Lankanfushi is my pick overall, for its villas, service and easy arrival. Four Seasons Landaa Giraavaru is the most complete resort, with manta rays, marine conservation, serious wellness and something for every age. Soneva Jani has the most playful villas in the country, JOALI the strongest art and design, and COMO Cocoa Island suits anyone who values privacy and wellness. The St. Regis Vommuli has the most glamorous service, and Baros is the best value for a short, easy stay with a good house reef.

Families should look closely at Four Seasons Landaa Giraavaru, Soneva Jani, JOALI and One&Only Reethi Rah. Divers and snorkellers will be happiest at Landaa Giraavaru, Six Senses Laamu, COMO Cocoa Island or Baros. Food lovers should start with Waldorf Astoria Ithaafushi.

How these resorts were chosen and ranked

Each resort was judged on its sense of place, villas designed for how you actually spend a day, reliable service, food you’d look forward to and a clear reason to travel to that particular island. Then come the practical points that shape a stay once you’ve arrived: transfer time, how good the reef is from the beach, the quality of the sand, privacy between villas, the size of the island, facilities for children and whether there’s enough variety for the length of your stay.

The order reflects how well each resort does across all of those, with the ones that excel at several things near the top and the more specialist choices lower down. It isn’t a ranking by price, awards or Instagram. The best luxury resort in the Maldives is the one whose strengths match the way you want to spend your week.

Prices are indicative and were last updated in October 2026. Rates change with season, exchange rates and availability, so check live prices before booking.

The 10 best luxury resorts in the Maldives

1. Gili Lankanfushi: best luxury resort overall

Gili Lankanfushi has around 45 villas and residences, every one of them over the water, with a deliberately relaxed style: natural wood, open-air bathrooms and a “no news, no shoes” philosophy that has guests leaving their shoes in a bag on arrival. Each villa has its own “Mr or Ms Friday”, a butler who handles everything from breakfast to dive bookings. Even the smallest category, the Villa Suite, gives you roughly 210 square metres, which no other resort here matches at entry level. At the top sits the Private Reserve, accessible solely by boat and widely cited as the biggest overwater villa anywhere. It was voted the world’s top hotel by Tripadvisor travellers in 2015 and still features regularly in its Travelers’ Choice Best of the Best awards.

Good to know: the butler system works best if you share your preferences early, such as when you like breakfast, whether you want to dive or snorkel, and any dinners you want to book, so your Mr or Ms Friday can plan around them. With so few villas, the island stays quiet even when it’s full, despite being only 20 minutes from the airport.

  • Best for: couples who want privacy without formality, and first-timers who want a short transfer.
  • Transfer: a speedboat from the airport in roughly 20 minutes, priced at about US$300 return per adult.
  • Rates: from around US$1,000 a night for a Villa Suite in low season (May to October) and around US$1,500 in high season, breakfast included, before taxes and service.

2. Four Seasons Landaa Giraavaru: best for marine encounters and all-round variety

Landaa Giraavaru ranks second because it does the most things well. Its 103 villas share a 44-acre island in Baa Atoll, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, and Hanifaru Bay is close by: from roughly May to November, hundreds of reef manta rays come there to feed. The Manta Trust has been based on the island with its Maldivian Manta Ray Project since 2005, while turtle rehabilitation and coral propagation at the Marine Discovery Centre are open to guests. Add AyurMa, a serious Ayurveda and wellness centre, and four restaurants including Blu (with menus shaped by two-Michelin-starred chef Nino Di Costanzo) and the rooftop Al Barakat, and it’s one of the most complete resorts in the country.

Between June and November, reef mantas gather to feed in Hanifaru Bay, a short boat ride from the Baa Atoll resorts in this list.

Good to know: Hanifaru Bay is a protected area where only snorkelling is allowed and visitor numbers are limited, so book the resort’s manta excursion when you book the room if your dates fall in the season. Sightings depend on currents and plankton, and the resort’s marine team will tell you each morning whether conditions look right.

  • Best for: divers, snorkellers, wildlife lovers and families who all want different things.
  • Transfer: a seaplane flight of around 35 minutes; fares start at US$460 per person one way, with roughly 28.7% tax and service added on top.
  • Rates: from around US$1,800 a night in low season (May to October) and around US$2,550 in high season, before 10% service, 17% GST and Green Tax; rates are usually room only, with breakfast on some.

3. Soneva Jani: best for show-stopping villas and families

Soneva Jani sits in a vast 5.6-kilometre lagoon in Noonu Atoll, with one to five-bedroom villas over the water and on the island. Plenty of them come with a water slide off the deck, and retractable roofs above the bed let you sleep under an open sky. There’s Cinema Paradiso, an overwater cinema with wireless headphones so the wildlife isn’t disturbed; an observatory with a resident astronomer; So Starstruck, an overwater restaurant with just four tables around a telescope; and The Den, one of the best kids’ clubs in the country.

Good to know: So Starstruck has only four tables, so reserve it as soon as your dates are confirmed, and check the moon phase if stargazing is the point: the darkest nights are around the new moon. Cinema Paradiso screenings and observatory sessions are worth planning into your week too.

  • Best for: once-in-a-lifetime trips and families who want space.
  • Transfer: a seaplane hop of roughly 40 minutes, so your international flight needs to reach Malé by 3.30pm; return fares are US$1,300 per adult, dropping to US$950 between early May and the end of September 2026.
  • Rates: entry villas start from around US$2,600 a night in low season (May to October) and around US$3,500 in high season, before taxes and service, and the biggest climb beyond US$8,000.

4. JOALI Maldives: best for art, design and families

JOALI is an art-immersive resort on Muravandhoo Island in Raa Atoll, with installations by international artists woven into the island instead of hidden in a gallery. All 73 beach villas, water villas and residences have private pools, and each stay is looked after by a “Jadugar”, JOALI’s word for a butler. Dining is one of its strengths, led by Saoke, where Japanese-Peruvian cooking meets an interior by designer Noriyoshi Muramatsu; breakfast comes with every booking.

Good to know: because breakfast is included but other meals aren’t, compare the half-board offers JOALI runs through the year with paying as you go. Saoke is the restaurant to book ahead. The art is spread across the island, so give yourself an afternoon to walk it.

  • Best for: design lovers, food lovers and multigenerational families.
  • Transfer: roughly 45 minutes on a shared seaplane, at about US$1,350 return per adult (US$675 for children aged 2 to 11).
  • Rates: from around US$1,650 a night in low season (May to October) and around US$2,500 in high season, breakfast included, before taxes and service.

5. COMO Cocoa Island: best for privacy and wellness

With just 33 overwater suites and villas, COMO Cocoa Island in South Malé Atoll is one of the most intimate resorts on this list. Their design borrows the curved form of the dhoni, the Maldives’ traditional fishing boat, and each deck has steps leading down into shallow water. The mood is calm and never showy, built around the COMO Shambhala retreat with its yoga, treatments and lighter menus, and a house reef you can reach from the island.

Good to know: COMO Shambhala runs yoga and wellness sessions alongside its treatments, and with so few suites they stay small. If the spa is a big part of why you’re going, book treatments when you book the suite, especially in peak season.

Overwater Villas, COMO Cocoa Island
COMO Cocoa Island’s overwater villas are built in the shape of traditional dhoni boats, which keeps the resort low and intimate.
  • Best for: spa-focused couples, honeymooners and anyone happier with silence than a busy activity programme.
  • Transfer: a speedboat run of roughly 40 minutes, US$350 return for each adult.
  • Rates: from around US$750 a night in low season (May to October) and around US$1,150 in high season, half board included, before taxes and service; rates vary widely by date, so check live prices.

6. Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi: best for dining and private pools

Spread across three connected islands in South Malé Atoll, Waldorf Astoria Ithaafushi offers reef, beach and overwater villas, every one with an infinity pool, plus Ithaafushi Private Island for those with a very large budget. The draw is food: 11 restaurants and bars run by a team of chefs from more than 20 countries, including Terra, where you eat in bamboo pods up in the treetops; Yasmeen for Middle Eastern mezze and wood-fired Peking duck; and Glow, a garden-to-table restaurant. The yacht transfer also means no seaplane timetable to fit.

Terra’s bamboo treetop pods at Waldorf Astoria Ithaafushi are one of the most distinctive dining settings in the Maldives.

Good to know: Terra has only seven pods, so it books up quickly. Reserve it for a special night as soon as you arrive, or ask your villa host to book it before you travel. With 11 places to eat, a dining credit or meal plan is worth pricing up in advance.

  • Transfer: a yacht crossing of around 40 minutes, costing US$900 return per adult, plus 28.7% tax and service.
  • Rates: a beach villa with pool starts from around US$2,450 a night in low season (May to October) and around US$2,750 in high season, before taxes and service; on points, budget roughly 120,000 Hilton Honors.

7. Baros Maldives: best for short stays and easy reef access

Baros is small, green and only about 25 minutes by speedboat from the airport, in North Malé Atoll. It’s one of the oldest resorts in the Maldives, and that shows in the best way: mature gardens and a house reef that’s been looked after for decades. There are 75 villas, including 24 Deluxe Villas of about 89 square metres by the beach, and three restaurants, among them the overwater Lighthouse for fine dining and the Cayenne Grill. Guests must be eight or older, so it’s quiet without being formally adults-only, and rates start well below most resorts on this list.

Good to know: the speedboat runs day and night, so Baros suits short trips and late arrivals. Check-out is at noon; late check-out depends on availability and is included as a perk when you book direct, so if your flight home is in the evening, ask about it when you book.

  • Best for: couples on a shorter trip, first-timers, snorkellers.
  • Transfer: speedboat in roughly 25 minutes at any hour; around US$260 return per adult, taxes included.
  • Don’t miss: the dine-around half-board plan (around US$145 per person per day), which spreads your dinners across Cayenne and The Lighthouse.
  • Rates: from around US$650 a night in low season (May to October) and around US$900 in high season, before taxes and service.

8. One&Only Reethi Rah: best for space and beach lovers

Most Maldivian islands are tiny. Reethi Rah, in North Malé Atoll, is an exception: around six kilometres of shoreline wrap one of the biggest private resort islands in the Maldives, with twelve beaches along the way. The smallest villa is roughly 135 square metres, the largest residences have several bedrooms, and the six restaurants include Tapasake, which serves Japanese food over the water. Bikes, tennis, a big spa and long stretches of sand make it the resort for people who get restless on a small island.

Good to know: bikes are the easiest way to get around such a large island, and with twelve beaches you can almost always find one to yourself. The size also means more walking or cycling between your villa and the restaurants than on a small island, which suits active travellers more than anyone wanting everything on the doorstep.

One&Only Reethi Rah, Maldives
One&Only Reethi Rah has twelve beaches on one island.
  • Best for: active families, groups and beach lovers.
  • Transfer: the resort’s shared yacht takes around 45 to 50 minutes, at about US$890 return per adult.
  • Rates: from around US$1,950 a night in low season (mid-July to mid-December) and around US$2,700 in high season (mid-January to mid-April), breakfast included, before taxes and service.

9. Six Senses Laamu: best for nature, surfing and sustainable luxury

Far down in the south, Six Senses Laamu has Laamu Atoll’s luxury market to itself, and the style follows: natural materials, barefoot dining and sustainability at the core. The ocean is the reason to come. Mantas at Hithadhoo Corner draw divers, the Yin Yang break draws surfers, and guests are welcome to join the marine team’s seagrass and reef projects. Choose it when nature counts for more than marble.

Good to know: the Yin Yang break is a reef break, so if surfing is the main reason for your trip, check with the resort about the best months and whether lessons suit your level before you book. Divers should ask about the manta sites at Hithadhoo Corner, which the resort’s dive team visits.

Six Senses Laamu, Maldives
Six Senses Laamu is the only luxury resort in Laamu Atoll.
  • Best for: divers, surfers and nature lovers staying a week or more.
  • Transfer: fly domestically to Kadhdhoo, then take a speedboat for around 15 minutes; the seaplane option costs about US$1,209 return per adult, taxes included.
  • Rates: from around US$1,100 a night in low season (May to October) and around US$1,550 in high season for a Lagoon Water Villa, with pool villas from around US$1,800, before taxes and service.

10. The St. Regis Maldives Vommuli: best for glamour and butler service

The St. Regis, in Dhaalu Atoll, is the most polished resort on this list. From above, its overwater villas trace a manta ray outline, while the Whale Bar, modelled on a whale shark, is raised over the lagoon and pours cocktails alongside Latin American tapas. Every villa has a pool and round-the-clock butler service. Below ground, Decanter holds more than 600 wines, and the overwater Iridium Spa and restaurants like Alba and Orientale round it out. It’s the choice for milestone celebrations and for anyone who wants the full luxury-hotel experience on an island.

Good to know: the Whale Bar’s sunset champagne-sabering ritual is one of the resort’s signatures, and worth timing an evening around. On Marriott Bonvoy points, a five-night award stay gets the fifth night free, which makes this one of the better-value ways to use points in the Maldives.

  • Best for: celebrations, points collectors and lovers of polished service.
  • Transfer: about 45 minutes by seaplane, at around US$870 return per adult.
  • Rates: from around US$1,800 a night in low season (May to October) and around US$2,800 in high season, before taxes and service, though rates vary widely by date, so check live prices; award stays run about 100,000 to 120,000 Marriott Bonvoy points, and a five-night award booking includes the fifth night free.

Which Maldives resort is right for your trip?

For a honeymoon, I’d narrow it to Gili Lankanfushi, COMO Cocoa Island or Soneva Jani, with Baros as the easier-on-the-budget option for a shorter trip. Gili is the most relaxed and spacious, COMO the quietest and most wellness-led, and Soneva Jani the most memorable villa. There’s more detail in our guide to the best Maldives resorts for couples, and if the country itself is still open, compare the honeymoon islands that suit first-timers.

For families, villa layout and the kids’ club count for more than a romantic reputation. Landaa Giraavaru has the broadest mix of nature and activities, Soneva Jani has the most playful villas and The Den, and JOALI combines creativity with family villas. Reethi Rah suits active families who want space to roam. The Maldives family resorts guide covers more options.

For divers and snorkellers, start with Landaa Giraavaru in manta season, Six Senses Laamu, COMO Cocoa Island or Baros. For food, Waldorf Astoria Ithaafushi has the most choice and JOALI the most memorable single restaurant.

What to know before booking

Add the transfer before you compare prices. For two people, the gap between a US$260 speedboat and a US$1,300 seaplane is more than US$2,000. Speedboats run day and night; seaplanes fly in daylight only and usually mean a lounge wait.

Compare meal plans line by line. Half board at one resort may cover a single restaurant, while another adds drinks or a dining credit. Service charge, 17% GST, Green Tax and festive supplements all change the final total, which our Maldives cost guide breaks down in full.

Choose the island first, then the villa. A beach villa gives you shade, sand and space; an overwater villa gives you the view and the ladder into the lagoon, but is often windier and less suitable for small children. Neither is inherently more luxurious. On a trip of seven nights or longer you can have both by splitting the stay; to decide on the length, see how long to spend in the Maldives.

My verdict

If you want one resort that does almost everything well and is easy to reach, book Gili Lankanfushi. If you want the most to do, choose Four Seasons Landaa Giraavaru, especially in manta season. Soneva Jani and JOALI are worth the seaplane for a longer, special-occasion trip, while COMO Cocoa Island and Baros are the strongest speedboat choices for quiet, reef-focused stays at different price points. Give a seaplane island at least a week.
