The best area to stay in Koh Samui for most luxury trips is the north-east: northern Chaweng or Chaweng Noi on the east coast, or Bophut and Choeng Mon along the north shore. Both put you within about 10 to 20 minutes of the airport, and both have a sea you can swim in from late December to April. If you want silence and sunsets more than dinners out, the west and south-west (Laem Yai, Lipa Noi, Taling Ngam) is the better answer, as long as you accept a drive of roughly 35 to 60 minutes each way.

Koh Samui is only about 25 kilometres across, yet the coast you pick changes three things: how far you are from the airport, whether the sea is calm during your month, and whether the evening is a walk to a bar or a candlelit table at the resort. This guide sorts the island by those factors and places five luxury resorts on the map. For a closer look at the room type itself, see the separate comparison of a Koh Samui private pool villa and a beachfront resort.

The quick answer: pick the coast, then the hotel

My short rule: choose the east coast for a stay of three or four nights in the dry months, the north-west or south-west when you are going in October to December, and the south-east when the plan is a private bay and little else. The sections below explain why.

Sea swimming by season: the factor that changes the answer

Samui faces the Gulf of Thailand, so it largely escapes the south-west monsoon that soaks Phuket and Krabi. Instead it takes the north-east monsoon, which brings its heaviest rain from around October into December, with November usually the wettest month. Guides to Chaweng Beach describe rough surf and rip currents during bad spells in those months, and recommend roughly late December to April for calm water. A quiet corner such as the sheltered northern end of Chaweng, where an offshore reef softens the swell, is gentler than the open centre of the bay, but it is still not a guarantee.

The west and south-west shores sit in the lee of that wind, which is why they can be calmer when the east is churned up, although I would not promise glass-flat water anywhere on the island in the wettest weeks. Rain tends to arrive in short bursts with clear mornings, so a wet-season trip is workable if you accept the odd lost day and book a resort where the pool does the swimming. Dates vary from year to year, so look at a live forecast before you commit.

Between January and April the whole island is dependable, and that is also when rates are highest. One guide suggests December to February can cost 40 to 80 per cent more than shoulder season, so booking two to three months ahead for peak weeks is sensible.

Koh Samui’s east and north coast beaches offer calm turquoise waters and beautiful tropical scenery, especially from January to April.

East coast: Chaweng Noi and northern Chaweng

Chaweng is the island’s nightlife hub, scoring top marks in most area guides for bars, restaurants and shopping, and it is also the nearest bay to the airport. The trick is to stay at its edges. Chaweng Noi, a small bay south of the main strip, and the northern end of Chaweng give you the convenience without the noise. Expect a short arrival, then a 10 to 15 minute ride to the centre when you want a night out.

Vana Belle, a Luxury Collection Resort: best for a quiet bay with Chaweng nearby

Vana Belle occupies the rocky headland and cove of Chaweng Noi, which is why it reads as sheltered although the airport is only about 10 to 15 minutes away, according to several listings. For the geography question this is the strongest example of the east coast done discreetly: the busy centre of Chaweng sits a short ride to the north, while the bay itself is small and landscaped. The cove faces east, so it takes the full force of the monsoon from October to December, and a swim in the sea becomes a gamble then. In dry months the position gives you sunrise light and easy access to Chaweng’s dining.

  • Best for: short stays and first visits that want a quiet bay but a lively evening within reach.
  • Location: Chaweng Noi, about 10 to 15 minutes from the airport by car.
  • Sea: East-facing and exposed to the north-east monsoon, so aim for January to April.
  • Rates: Jungle Pool Suites from around US$380 a night in the May to June and September to November shoulder months and around US$750 between December and April, room only and before 10% service and 7% VAT; Ocean Pool Suites start near US$550, and peak weeks from December to February cost the most.

Good to know: Anyone who plans to join the Chaweng nightlife should ask about late-night taxis, since the resort’s cove is a short ride from the strip rather than a walk.

Chaweng Noi’s small, rock-framed bay is the quiet corner of the island’s busiest coast.

Anantara Lawana Koh Samui Resort: best for the shortest airport transfer

Anantara Lawana stands on the northern end of Chaweng Beach, the quiet stretch of the bay, and sources put the airport at roughly 7 to 10 minutes away. That makes it the most practical pick on this list for a flight-timed itinerary: you can be on the sand within half an hour of landing. Kuoni describes the main beach area as about a ten-minute tuk-tuk ride, and Virgin Atlantic mentions a walk of around 15 minutes to town, so you can decide each evening whether to go out. The northern end of the bay is where the offshore reef softens the waves, which is useful when the rest of the east coast is rough, though I would still check conditions in November.

  • Best for: short trips, early or late flights and couples who want restaurants a ride away.
  • Location: North Chaweng Beach; airport about 7 to 10 minutes by road.
  • Evenings: Chaweng’s restaurants and bars are about a 10-minute tuk-tuk ride or a walk of roughly 15 minutes.
  • Rates: a Deluxe Lawana room is the lowest entry rate of these five resorts, at roughly US$180 a night off-peak and about US$330 from December to April, plus 17.7% service and VAT; pool villa rates are on request, and Christmas and New Year carry surcharges.

Northern Chaweng is the closest luxury beachfront to the runway, which is the whole case for choosing it.

North and north-west: Bophut, Choeng Mon and Laem Yai

The north coast is where I would send people who want an evening scene that is not Chaweng. Fisherman’s Village in Bophut is the island’s most atmospheric dining street, and guides rate Bophut’s nightlife a notch below Chaweng but a clear step above the quiet coasts. Choeng Mon, round the north-east corner, has a calm shallow bay and is about 15 minutes from Chaweng. Bophut’s beach narrows during the monsoon but the water stays comparatively sheltered, which is an advantage over the east.

A little further west, Laem Yai on the north-west corner takes a different character: quieter, with views toward the sunset, and more reliant on your resort. It is the middle option between Chaweng and the far south-west.

W Koh Samui: best for a social resort away from Chaweng

W Koh Samui sits on the Laem Yai headland in the north-west, around 30 minutes from the airport by most estimates, so it is a drive rather than a hop. The hotel markets its private beach as swimmable year-round, which would be a real advantage over the east in the wet months, though reviews of Laem Yai conflict, with one noting the sea is shallow at low tide, so ask the resort what the water is doing in your week. The position suits guests who want music, cocktails and a sociable pool scene inside the resort and would not mind a taxi to Bophut or Mae Nam for dinner. If your reason for the north coast is Fisherman’s Village on foot, a hotel in Bophut itself would fit better.

  • Best for: sociable couples and groups who want a lively base off the Chaweng strip.
  • Location: Laem Yai, north-west coast; around 30 minutes from the airport (estimated).
  • Sea: The hotel describes its beach as suitable for year-round swimming; confirm for your dates.
  • Rates: garden-view private-pool villas cost about US$470 a night in low season and about US$800 in the December to April high season, before 10% service and 7% VAT; beachfront one-bedroom villas begin around US$720.

Good to know: I could not confirm a drive time to Fisherman’s Village, so ask the hotel for the current taxi fare before you plan several dinners there.

South-east: Lamai and the private bays

Lamai is the island’s second resort area, lower in volume and price than Chaweng, with its own beach strip and bars. The luxury resorts in the hills nearby are a different proposition: you are choosing a cove, not a town. Distances grow, with the airport about 30 minutes away and Chaweng around 15 kilometres, so a night out becomes a planned taxi trip.

Banyan Tree Samui: best for a private bay and long spa days

Banyan Tree Samui takes a hillside cove on the south-east coast, with the main area of Lamai about 5 kilometres away and Chaweng roughly 15 kilometres, according to the resort’s own FAQ. Its airport estimate is about 30 minutes, with other sources suggesting 20 to 26 minutes. Because the cove faces the same direction as Chaweng, it is exposed to the same autumn weather, and in those months its private pool and spa programme carry the stay. In the dry season the bay is the attraction. This is the coast for guests who have decided in advance that dinner will be at the resort.

  • Best for: honeymoons and anyone who wants a private cove and a spa-led week.
  • Location: Lamai hills, about 5 km from central Lamai and 15 km from central Chaweng.
  • Transfers: Usually not included; the resort offers a limousine, and taxis are an alternative.
  • Rates: entry Pool Villas of about 130 square metres run from around US$420 a night outside the dry season to around US$800 from December to April, before 10% service and 7% VAT, with Ocean View Pool Villas reaching about US$990 at peak.

South-west: Lipa Noi and Taling Ngam

Taling Ngam and neighbouring Lipa Noi are the quietest part of the island, with sunsets over the Gulf and very little nightlife. Guides pair this coast with seclusion, and Forbes Travel Guide describes the Taling Ngam area as relatively undeveloped. The price is distance: an airport taxi to Taling Ngam is about 33 minutes on Rome2Rio’s estimate, and hotel listings quote 55 to 60 minutes, so plan on 35 to 60 depending on traffic. The same source lists a taxi fare of around THB 1,100 to 1,400, so budget for the transfer in both directions.

Conrad Koh Samui: best for sunsets and sheltered-coast seclusion

Conrad Koh Samui is built on a 25-acre hillside at the south-western tip, facing the Gulf and the sunset, with a beach below the slope. For the geography question this is the most committed choice on the island: you are as far from Chaweng as the road allows. The advantage is the lee shore, which tends to be calmer than the east when the north-east monsoon blows, though I could find no reliable source on its swimming conditions, so ask the resort. Expect to eat at the hotel most nights and to hire a car for anything else.

  • Best for: sunset-driven couples and guests who want an island stay without a nightlife scene.
  • Location: Taling Ngam, south-west; allow roughly 35 to 60 minutes from the airport.
  • Evenings: The resort is the destination; restaurants elsewhere need a car.
  • Rates: One-bedroom pool villas with a 10-metre infinity pool start at roughly US$450 a night in the wetter shoulder months and about US$800 in the dry season, room only and before 10% service and 7% VAT; ocean-view villas are priced on request.

Good to know: Confirm the transfer price and time with the resort when you book, since taxi quotes vary by driver and time of day.

Nightlife or seclusion: how to decide

If you want a bar or a restaurant outside the hotel most nights, the order is Chaweng, then Bophut, then Lamai. Choose northern Chaweng or Chaweng Noi and you get that choice within a short ride. Couples who describe a good evening as a long dinner at the resort will be happier in the south-east or south-west, where the resorts have the restaurants. Adults-only travellers may also want to browse the best adults-only island resorts.

For a seven-night stay, one tactic is to split the week: four nights at northern Chaweng, then three at the quiet end of the island. For three or four nights, a second hotel costs half a day in luggage and transfers, so I would stay put. If you are weighing Samui against a different kind of holiday altogether, Bali against the Maldives shows how far apart the islands of the region can be, and the shortlist of island resorts with private pools goes beyond Thailand.

The verdict

For most people the best area to stay in Koh Samui is the north-east, and within it I would pick northern Chaweng for a short trip and Chaweng Noi when a quieter cove matters. If you are travelling in October to December, move towards the north-west or the south-west, where the sea is more likely to be usable. Choose the south-east only if the private bay is the point, and the south-west only if you are comfortable with a long drive and dinners at the resort.

In practice the decision is simple: count how many evenings you want to spend away from the hotel, check the month against the monsoon, and then pick the coast that fits both.
