The simplest Bali split stay Ubud and beach plan is Ubud first, then Sanur, with the hotel change on a morning when you have nothing else booked. Spend three or four nights inland, move to the coast for the rest, and finish a short drive from the airport. For seven nights I would go 3 + 4; for ten nights, 4 + 6. This guide is about the logistics: how many nights each place deserves, how long the roads really take, which way round to do it and what to do with your luggage on the day you switch.

Sanur is my default beach end because it is the easiest one to leave from, not because it is the most glamorous. If you want cliff-top drama, Nusa Dua vs Uluwatu covers the alternatives, and both add more road time than this pairing does.

Rice terraces at Tegallalang near Ubud, Bali
Tegallalang is a 20 to 30 minute drive north of Ubud town, which is why it works best as a first-thing-in-the-morning stop before the tour buses arrive.

Quick answer: how many nights in each place

Trip lengthUbudBeach (Sanur)Why this split
5 nights23Tight; only worth it if you cannot spare more
7 nights34Enough for one full Ubud day, one day trip and a slow beach finish
8 to 9 nights44 to 5The most relaxed balance of sightseeing and rest
10 nights46Room for a Nusa Penida or Lembongan day from Sanur
12+ nights57Consider a third base only if you want a specific extra, such as a surf coast

Two nights is the minimum that makes a hotel change worthwhile. A single night wastes the best part of a day on packing, driving and check-in, and you never quite unpack. Indicatively, an entry room at the four resorts below runs from around IDR 2.3 million to IDR 5.8 million a night (roughly US$140 to US$360) before Bali’s 21% tax and service, with private-pool villas well above that.

Prices are indicative and were last updated in October 2026. Rates change with season, exchange rates and availability, so check live prices before booking.

Ubud first or last?

Ubud first. The airport to Ubud road is the longest and least predictable drive in the whole itinerary, usually quoted at 36 to 40 km and anywhere from about one hour to two and a half in heavy traffic. Getting it done straight after landing means you spend the jet-lagged hours in a car once, then settle into a quiet valley. Doing it the other way round means your last day involves the same drive with a flight to catch, and that is where plans go wrong.

There is a second reason. Ubud is the more demanding half of the trip, with early starts for terraces and temples. Finishing on a beach where nothing is scheduled gives the holiday a gentler landing, and Sanur is a roughly 25 to 30 minute airport run in normal traffic. Reversing the order only makes sense if you arrive very late at night, in which case a first night near the airport or in Sanur and a morning drive to Ubud can be smarter than a midnight transfer.

Driving times and traffic, honestly

JourneyTypical timeWhat changes it
Airport to UbudAbout 1 to 1.5 hours; up to 2.5 in bad trafficDenpasar bypass, Kerobokan and the Batubulan junction are the usual bottlenecks
Ubud to SanurAbout 60 to 90 minutesMid-morning is generally easier than late afternoon
Sanur to airportAbout 25 to 30 minutesFlight-day mornings are busy, so leave a buffer
Within Ubud (centre to outer resorts)15 to 25 minutesNarrow lanes and tour-bus traffic around the centre

Treat these as planning figures from local transport guides rather than guarantees. The late afternoon window, roughly 4.30pm to 7.30pm, is the one to avoid for any long transfer, and ride-hailing apps or a pre-booked private car are the usual way to keep the price and timing predictable. Distances look short on a map and still take far longer than you expect, so plan one significant move a day at most.

Maya Ubud sits on the Peliatan side of town, so a day of sightseeing can start within minutes of the gate.

The hotel-change day, step by step

  • 7.30 to 8.30am: breakfast, then finish packing. Ask the hotel to hold your bill for a quick checkout.
  • 9.00am: leave Ubud with a confirmed private car. This gets you ahead of the heaviest southbound traffic.
  • 10.30 to 11am: arrive in Sanur. Rooms are rarely ready, so leave the bags and go for a walk or lunch on the beachfront promenade.
  • 2pm onwards: check in, swim, and do nothing else. Do not schedule a transfer-day temple stop.

Skipping detours is the single most useful rule. Every extra stop in South Bali costs far more than it looks on the map, and a rushed transfer day is the one place people regret trying to be efficient.

Packing and luggage for two bases

Pack for two climates in one suitcase. Ubud is cooler and damper in the evenings and rewards light long sleeves, walking sandals and a compact rain layer; the beach needs swimwear and little else. Temple visits require a sarong and covered shoulders, which many hotels and temples can lend, but bringing your own is easier. Keep a small day bag with swimwear, sunscreen and a charger so you can use the pool the moment you arrive, even before your room is ready.

If you will be flying domestically or taking a fast boat to Nusa Penida or Lembongan, keep luggage compact: boats and small planes are stricter than your international allowance. Hotels will usually store a spare bag for a day trip, so you do not need to carry everything.

Sample 7-night and 10-night itineraries

Seven nights: 3 in Ubud, 4 in Sanur

  • Day 1: land, drive to Ubud, early dinner and bed.
  • Day 2: Tegallalang terraces at opening time, then a long lunch and spa afternoon.
  • Day 3: temples, galleries or a cooking class, all kept to the Ubud side of the island.
  • Day 4: morning transfer to Sanur, afternoon on the sand.
  • Days 5 to 7: promenade walks, a spa day, one boat or south-coast outing and a last easy dinner before the airport.

Ten nights: 4 in Ubud, 6 in Sanur

  • Days 1 to 4: as above, with an extra day for a waterfall or the north-central highlands.
  • Day 5: change hotels in the morning.
  • Days 6 to 10: two lazy beach days, a Nusa Penida or Lembongan day trip by fast boat, a south-Bali dining evening and a final slow day.

Both plans give each place at least three nights, which is where the second base starts to feel like a different holiday and not a long detour.

Maya Sanur Resort & Spa pool and gardens
Maya Sanur is a few minutes from the beach on foot, which makes it a good base for the promenade and the harbour.

Where to stay: two bases, four hotels

The four resorts below are the ones I would shortlist for this route, two in each base. Check the inclusions on each rate because meals, afternoon tea and transfers change the real price.

Villa pool and tropical garden at a Bali resort
Whichever base you choose, a private plunge pool is the easiest way to enjoy a hotel on the days when traffic makes sightseeing unattractive.

Alila Ubud: best for a valley setting

Alila Ubud overlooks the Ayung River valley, a world away from the central Ubud crowds. It currently has around 56 rooms and 18 villas, ranging from hillside Deluxe Rooms to Valley Villas and Pool Villas, with larger family options. From a logistics view, its distance from the centre matters: the resort puts central Ubud at roughly 15 minutes by car, so day plans work best when grouped by area. That also means it is a calm place to spend the first night after the long airport drive.

  • Best for: couples who want quiet scenery over walking-distance dining.
  • Location: Ayung River valley, around 15 minutes from Ubud centre by car.
  • Rates: Superior valley-view rooms from around IDR 2.3 million (about US$140) a night in the wetter January to March and November months, and around IDR 3.2 million (about US$200) in July, August and over Christmas, plus 21% tax and service.
  • Don’t miss: a valley-view lunch on the day you arrive, when you will not want to travel anywhere.

Good to know: request a late checkout if you are heading south in the afternoon, but I would still leave early to beat the traffic.

Alila Ubud offers a secluded luxury retreat overlooking Bali’s lush Ayung River Valley, with rooms and villas inspired by a traditional Balinese village.

Maya Ubud Resort & Spa: best for an easier day-to-day Ubud base

Maya Ubud sits on about 18 hectares by the Petanu River in Peliatan, closer to the town than most luxury resorts and with a free shuttle into the centre according to several booking listings (confirm the current timetable with the resort). Villa categories include forest-facing suites, Jacuzzi Villas and Pool Villas, and some rates add afternoon tea or yoga. For a split trip, its advantage is simple logistics: you can be in town within a short drive and still return to a quiet property.

  • Best for: travellers who want to eat in town, browse and see Ubud without long drives.
  • Location: Peliatan, roughly 10 to 22 minutes from central Ubud depending on source and traffic.
  • Rates: Impressive Forest Suites start at roughly IDR 2.4 million (about US$150) a night from January to March and in October and November, rising to about IDR 4.1 million (about US$250) in July, August and the Christmas weeks, before 21% tax and service; breakfast is included on some rates only.
  • Don’t miss: the river-side spa, ideal for an afternoon after a morning of sightseeing.

Good to know: breakfast depends on the rate, so check before comparing prices.

Andaz Bali: best for an easy airport finish in Sanur

Andaz Bali is a modern beachfront resort in Sanur, with around 149 rooms, suites and villas, including large Garden Pool Villas and Beach Pool Villas. Sources put the airport at roughly 20 to 30 minutes away, so the last day is relaxed. Its Village Square restaurants and the beach seafood concept at Fisherman’s Club also keep you from needing a car in the evenings, which suits the slow second half of the plan.

  • Best for: design-led stays with a short airport run on departure day.
  • Location: Sanur beachfront, around 20 to 30 minutes from the airport.
  • Rates: an Andaz King or Twin garden room costs from around IDR 3.6 million (about US$220) a night in low season (January to March and November) and around IDR 5.8 million (about US$360) in high season (July, August and the festive weeks), room only and before 21% tax and service; Garden Pool Villas start near IDR 5.7 million (about US$350).
  • Don’t miss: dinner at Fisherman’s Club on your last night.

Good to know: arrival from Ubud before noon usually means waiting for the room, so use the pool and have lunch first.

Andaz Bali features multiple swimming pools set within lush tropical gardens along Sanur’s beachfront.

Maya Sanur Resort & Spa: best for a flexible second base

Maya Sanur is a compact resort of around 103 rooms and suites, from 57-square-metre Garden View rooms to private-pool suites such as the 122-square-metre Heavenly Pool Suite. Its position is walkable to the beach and to Sanur’s shops, and it is a short walk from the fast-boat operators, so it works well if you plan a Nusa Penida or Lembongan day. Airport time is around 25 minutes, comparable to Andaz.

  • Best for: couples or families who want a choice of room types and quick access to boat day trips.
  • Location: Jalan Danau Tamblingan, a short walk from the beach.
  • Rates: Wonderful Garden View rooms list from around IDR 2.4 million (about US$150) a night in the quieter months and about IDR 4.1 million (about US$250) at peak, before 21% tax and service; rates vary widely by date, so check live prices, and ask for pool-suite rates directly.
  • Don’t miss: an early walk to the harbour to see where the day-trip boats leave.

Good to know: beach distance is quoted differently across listings, so check the exact location if direct sand access matters.

Who should split, and who should not

If you have fewer than five nights, one base and a couple of day trips is usually calmer. If your priority is surfing, nightlife or cliff villas, a different south-coast base suits you better, as covered in the Nusa Dua vs Uluwatu comparison. For a view of how Bali sits against a single-resort holiday, Bali vs Maldives is worth reading before you commit, and the private-pool island resorts list shows how Bali villas compare elsewhere. The island also appears in luxury islands without a seaplane transfer, if road transfers are part of the appeal.

Rain is worth planning around: April to October is the drier stretch, while November to March brings more showers, which hit the Ubud days harder because so many of them are outdoors. May, June and September tend to be the sweet spot. International visitors also pay the Bali tourism levy of IDR 150,000 on arrival, best paid in advance through the official Love Bali site.

The verdict

Book Ubud first, Sanur second, and keep the hotel-change day completely free. Three or four nights inland, then the rest by the sea, gives you two different holidays for the cost of one transfer and an easy flight home. Choose Alila Ubud if the view comes first, Maya Ubud if you want town within reach, and pick between Andaz Bali and Maya Sanur on style versus room choice.
